Dragon Fruit also called Fire Dragon Fruit, Strawberry Pear, Pitaya or Pitahaya is a fruit of few cactus species:
- Hylocereus undatus (Red Pitaya) has bright pink/red skn and white flesh.
- Hylocereus costaricensis (Costa Rica Pitaya) has red skin and red flesh.
- Hylocereus megalanthus (Yellow Pitaya) has yellow skin and white flesh.
Although they have different peel and flesh colours, all of them have lots of little black pits alike kiwi fruits.
Dragon fruits are native to Mexico, Central and South America, but also to Asia: Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, but they are also known in Australia, China, Japan, Israel, Hawaii.
In taste they are similar to kiwis or melons but much more subtle and not very sweet… almost tasteless to me. But they are rich in vitamin C, calcium, antioxidants and fiber.
Dragon fruit skin should not be consumed, only flesh. They can be halved and eaten by scooping out the flesh or peeled and cubed. They are great fruits for garnish: scooped out with melon baller or diced and used for decoration on ice creams or cakes. Sorbets and juices can be made of them as well.
These are so pretty!
