INGREDIENTS
for the hedgehog body
½ melon for the hedgehog body (I used cantaloupe / rock melon but watermelon would be better, especially that you would use inside for the sticks)
grapes and blueberries or other small fruits for hedgehog nose and eyes
for the sticks
sticks / toothpicks
mango (cubed)
brie (cubed)
cherry tomatoes
mature Cheddar cheese (cubed)
mild Cheddar cheese (cubed)
watermelon (cubed)
feta or salad cheese (cubed)
red grapes
crackers to serve
EQUIPMENT
metal skewer to prick melon skin
METHOD
First place three sticks deep inside the melon, on the front, to stick hedgehog eyes and nose.
Then prick melon skin all over with metal skewer. Place on sticks: feta with watermelon, brie and mango, cherry tomatoes and mild Cheddar, grapes with mature Cheddar and stick on hedgehog.
Store in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
Serve with crackers on the side.
I made this hedgehog (actually two of them) for my daughter’s birthday party and I used our favorite cheese & fruit combination:
- Watermelon & Feta
- Cherry Tomatoes & Mild Cheddar
- Mango & Brie
- Red Grapes & Mature Cheddar
So cute and clever – and looks delicious, too!
This is a classic that never goes out of style! We call them porcupines. :) Either way, they’re fun for adults and children–delicious, too!
